Although there is a healthy demand for this boat among cruising enthusiasts, the Ontario 28 is actually fairly rare - less than 50 of this boat were made. Unlike most other manufacturers who start off building smaller designs and work they way up to larger boats, Ontario Yachts first established the Ontario line of sailboats with a 32 foot model. When they saw that the Ontario 32 was a hit with cruisers, they decided to commission and build a slightly smaller version of this boat. However, the production of the Ontario 28 was cut short by the slump in the sailboat industry which began to take hold in the mid 1980s.

While the Ontario 28 traces its lines back to the C&C design team, it has a relatively shallow draft and a very wide beam for a 28 footer. It also has a T-shaped cockpit and bulwarks, a rare feature in production boats under 30 feet in length. The Ontario 28 is also a big 28 footer. In fact, it's almost 29 feet long, and at one time, it was briefly marketed as the "Ontario 29".
