Mass swim event on the Ottawa River - Saturday, July 14, 2012.
Although it’s not a sailing event, it starts at the Nepean Sailing Club, and finishes at the Britannia Yacht Club. It’s an open-water swim event that features as many as 400 people swimming a 3 km course across Britannia Bay.
The event started five years ago with 12 swimmers, but has grown ever since. Last year over 300 people participated, and this year organizers are expecting as many as 400 swimmers. If they get over 450 (which is definitely possible), it will become Canada’s largest open-water swim.
A number of sailboats anchor next to the course (which is well marked) and their crews cheer on the swimmers.
Depending on wind and wave conditions, the faster swimmers can complete the course in little over half an hour. However, the bulk of participants complete the course around the one hour mark.
This swim is officially called “Bring on the Bay”, and it is a fund raiser for the Ottawa Easter Seals Regatta. The event starts at Nepean Sailing Club at 8:00 am on Saturday, July 14, 2012.
