007 is Shark #7 (hull #7) and most likely the the very first fiberglass keelboat built in Canada, giving it some historical significance in the Canadian sailboat industry.

Despite its age, it has undergone a number of updates and is more than ready for racing. It has the latest elliptical shaped rudder, race worthy sails, and a current class association measurement certificate.

History

The 24 foot Shark was first built in 1959, and widely regarded as the first fiberglass keelboat built in Canada. The first four Sharks were built out of plywood. Shark # 5, and possibly Shark # 6 were hybrids, with fiberglass hulls and wooden deck, cockpits, and cabin structures. 007 was the next one built, and it was made entirely out of fiberglass. As a result, it's probably the first fibergalss keelboat manufactured in Canada.

Updates & Upgrades

007 has undergone a number of updates and upgrades over the years. Long gone are the original wooden mast and boom, obsolete motor well, and old-fashion mid-cockpit winch. It now has a modern aluminum mast and boom, a transom mounted motor, and winches on both cockpit coamings. The windows were replaced with contemporary-looking plexiglass windows.

Restoration Work

Because of its age, 007 has undergone some fairly serious restoration work. In 2001 I replaced the main bulkheads with marine grade plywood with an attractive mahogany veneer (a major job). http://sailquest.com/ottawa-sharks/repairs.htm

In 2003 I sanded the hull (the topsides) deck, cabin, and cockpit and had everything repainted with an extremely durable two-part polyurethane finish (similar to Awlgrip). A professional paint job resulted in a particularly nice finish of the hull. As an added bonus, two-part paint finishes do not have to be waxed to look good.

In 2005 the bottom and keel were completed stripped and coated with an Interprotect epoxy barrier.

Previous owners also did some restoration work on 007. For example, the standard steel keel hangers which are often found partly rusted-out on many Sharks have been replaced with stainless steel units.

Racing Features

007 weights in light. In accordance with class rules, corrected weights have been installed under the bunk tops just above the keel (where the weight is most effective).

007 comes with the latest elliptical shaped rudder from .

007's sails are in excellent condition, and are still very crisp. This is especially true of the main and jib, which are ready top level regatta racing. The Genoa is almost as good, although anyone shooting for a first place finish at a major regatta would probably want something that's a touch newer. There's also a light weight radial spinnaker that has plenty of life left in. (Note: 007 has a second set of sails that are still in relatively good shape, and can still be used for club racing.)

This Shark is equipped with a single point lifting eye and lift strap. This makes it much faster and easier than using straps when launching or hauling out at regattas (or at the beginning or end of the season)

It is also equipped with a Harken windward sheeting traveler car (a $450 option), newer main winches (about 6 years old), and comes with a current class association measurement certificate (issued in 2006).

In addition to everything above, the boat comes with seven 007 T-shirts (sizes M, L, XL, XXL - the sizes are cut small). These are brand new T-shirts - they have never been worn. There is also a 007 cap, (worn one or two twice).
